Damien Mitchell earns Foundation Award
The Memorial Educational Foundation awarded its 21st Annual Mary Grace Pete Scholarship in the amount of $500 to Damien Damon Mitchell, son of Mary and Elton Jack of Rayne.
Damien Damon is a 2008 graduate of Rayne High School and is enrolled at the University of Louisiana of Lafayette, pursuing a degree in industrial design.
At Rayne High, Mitchell was a member of the Jr. Beta Club, the National Honor Society, and the track and football teams.
He is a member of Progressive Baptist Church of Lafayette. His pastor is the Rev. Lloyd Joiner, Jr. Damien participated in fund raisers at his church which benefited his fellowmen.
The scholarship was founded by Mrs. Pete’s son, the late Dr. J. Allen Pete, Jr. The scholarship is administered by Gloria Pete Baptiste, Delores Pete Owens and Evelyn Pete Pleasure.
Applications for the scholarship are available from counselors at high schools. To qualify, students from religious homes must be nominated by their pastor, priest, rabbi or religious leader. Letters of nomination accompanied by a transcript of academic credits earned, and a picture of the applicant in graduation cap and robe.
