Delhi High School Student of the Year named
Shaletta D. McDade was named Delhi High School Student-of-the-Year after competing with her peers at DHS.
The initial group of nominees was judged on their academic as well as school and community involvement.
Principal, Hamilton Brock, describes Shaletta as a hard working, conscientious student who cares about others and is active in her school and community. Shaletta is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd McDade and is a senior at Delhi High School.
McDade has an impressive vita of honors and activity awards. She has been a member of the talented arts program since 8th grade, was a Science Olympiad in 8th and 9th grades winning 3rd Place Honors each year, First Place 8th grade parish Science Fair, Accelerated Reading Award in 9th grade, Participated in the AHEC Program with four weeks of volunteer work in the Health and Medical Program where she was awarded 1st prize for her Career Poster, member of the DHS Technology Team.
In 2006 she was awarded 4th place in the Louisiana High School Technology Challenge. She has been a 3.8 honor student throughout her school years scoring Mastery on the Math GEE. She was named Junior Homecoming Maid in 2007, and participated in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at ULM in the summer of 2008 as part of the Pre-College Summer Research Program.
McDade was a state qualifier in a number of track and field events over the past four years. She is a member of the DHS National Honor Society and the 4-H Club where she serves in a variety of leadership roles. She has taken honors classes throughout her 4 years in high school. She serves her school also as a yearbook and club editor (2007-2009). She has been a member of the DHS Dance Line Team over the past 3 years serving as Co-Captain and Captain.
Volunteerism is of special interest for Shaletta. She has served the sports programs of DHS as statistician for basketball. She has served in the Children’s Coalition of Monroe since 2005, during Poppy Day, Girls State; American Legion, Life Share Blood Donor Drive, and Deerfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
McDade and her family are active members of Greater One Christian Fellowship in Delhi where she participates in the youth department activities and excels in performing spiritual dance.
She was the highest rated nominee and was the unanimous choice of the selection committee. She will be in competition with others school nominees in Richland Parish to be named the District Student of the Year for the high school division.
