Diamond Action Heating Up For Wolves, Ladies

The 2011-2012 season for Rayne High’s baseball and softball teams has begun and diamond action is heating up.

The Wolves began their season last weekend in the St. Martinville Tournament, recording a 1-2 record. In game one, the Wolves fell to Breaux Bridge, 3-1. Jacob Stelly went 1-2 at the plate, while freshman pitcher Hunter Keely pitched four innings and struck out four hitters.

Rayne dropped game two to the Carencro, 5-3. Dustin Dupuis drove in two runs and Ty Delahoussaye went 1-3, driving in a run.

Game three was better for the Wolves, slamming the hosts, 10-0. Tyler Lejeune went (3-4) scored two runs with two RBI’s and two doubles. Grant Menard (2-4) scored two runs, and had two RBI’s, while Matt Dore (3-4) had two runs batted in and a run. Grant Abshire was 1-2 and scored a run.

During Tuesday’s homestand game against Iota, the Wolves hosted the Iota Bulldogs and claimed a 3-0 win. Rayne knocked in one run a piece in second, third, and fourth innings. The Wolves also tagged six hits while only committed two errors.

Grant Menard went 2-3 from the plate, Matt Dore (1-2) scored a run and Grant Abshire was 1-1 and earned a base on balls.

Taking the win on the mound was freshman hurler Hunter Keely who faced 18 batters and stuck out six.

The Wolves will participate in the Eunice Tournament this weekend.

In Tuesday afternoon softball action, the Lady Wolves dropped their district slate to 1-1 with a 11-4 loss over Port Barre.

Katelyn LeDoux was tagged with the loss on the mound for the error-plagued Lady Wolves while going 1-4 at the plate.

Despite a number of stranded baserunners, Lady Wolves Courtney Boutin and Whitney Fontenot led at the plate at 3-for-4, with Boutin recording an in the park home run. Alex Peltier was 2-4 while teammates Amanda Bourque, Ariel Meche, Mollie Simon and Sidney Fontenot each collected a hit apiece.

During their first district contest at Livonia on March 1st, the Lady Wolves recorded a 12-0 win.

Seven Lady Wolves recorded scores for the district win, including three by LeDoux and Meche, two by Bourque, and one apiece by Boutin, Peltier, Threatts amd Fontenot.

Haley Habetz recorded the win for Rayne High, striking out four while allowing only two hits.

The Lady Wolves will travel to Church Point today (Thursday) for another district contest, followed by tournament action this weekend at Parkview.
