"Dixie Dawgs" to bring USSSA elite 7-year-old baseball to Acadiana
LAFAYETTE – The Lafayette and Acadiana area will have an entry in the elite level of United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) 7-year-old baseball during the 2011 season, with the formation of the “Dixie Dawgs.”
The team will draw players from around the Acadiana area, concentrating on Lafayette, Abbeville, Opelousas, Crowley and New Iberia. Players may not turn eight years old until after May of 2011 in order to take part.
All games will be played on weekends, allowing team members to play recreational ball during the week and on non-tournament weekends. Approximately two dozen Louisiana teams currently participate in USSSA’s AAA level for 7-year-olds.
There will be no official “tryouts.” Instead, interested youth will be given a private tutorial/lesson by a high school or college level player to assess the skills and attitude of each youth before recommendations are made to team officials. Team size is anticipated at 12 players.
The Dixie Dawgs will not be a pay-to-play team. All expenses for players will be covered by the team including equipment and travel, and assistance for parents who travel may also be available.
Parents interested in having sons play on the team may contact the team at (337) 593-4727. All parents will be required to interview with team officials, who will stress good character and that the team is being created for the players and not coaches and parents. While the goal of the Dixie Dawgs is to win games and tournaments, and to compete at the highest level, all involved with the team will strive to remember that winning should be a by-product of having each player reach his full potential, while still allowing players to enjoy the game of baseball.
