Early voting continues

Early voting began last Tuesday, Oct. 21 and many voters are taking the opportunity to cast their votes early for different reasons.

Abbeville Voter Registrar Michael J. Bertrand said he thinks the turnout for early voters is considerably larger than the turnout for local elections because of the media attention associated with the presidential election.

Because of the media attention, Bertrand said “people want to make a special effort to vote for the presidential election.”

According to Bertrand, more than 700 voters have already cast their ballot since Tuesday, and he predicts yesterday’s turnout will add another 300-400 voters to the tally.

“The turnout is pretty usual for a presidential election,” Bertrand said. “We definitely have more (early voter participants) than we’ve had for local elections,” he added.

The early voting process is running smoothly. Bertrand said there was a line Tuesday, but people are able to vote relatively quickly.

Bertrand noted that many people are still requesting absentee voting ballots, because, for various reasons, they will not be able to vote in their designated precinct.

Early voting continues through Tuesday, Oct. 28.
