CROWLEY – Registrar of Voters Billie Meyer has announced that early voting in Acadia Parish for the November 4, 2008 Open General/Presidential/Congressional Election will begin today, Tuesday October 21.

The voting is to last through Saturday, October 25 and Monday, October 27 through Tuesday October 28. “Office hours have been extended each day from 8:30 a.m. 6 p.m. each day,” informed Meyer.

Meyer also would like to remind voters that proper identification is required, which includes a current Louisiana Driver’s License or current Louisiana Identification card and your Voter Identification Card.

“This is going to be an interesting week,” Meyer said matter-of-factly. “We have a couple of close races on our hands,” she added.

On the ballot are candidates for U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative, President of the U.S. and the City Court Sixth Ward Judge. Also on the ballot are a few proposed Constitutional Amendments, which would, 1. Establish term limits for members of state boards and commissions. 2. Require two additional days of notice before calling a special legislative session. 3. Allow temporary successors to be appointed for legislators called to active military duty. 4. Redistribute severance tax revenue 5. Allow the transfer of the special property tax assessment level for certain homeowners 6. Change the requirements for public bodies to re-sell expropriated property 7. Authorize certain post-retirement benefit funds to be invested in stocks.

Meyer went on to explain that in Acadia Parish, there are 23,339 registered Democrats and 8,000 registered Republicans. Another 7453 are undecided/other, which brings the total amount of registered voters in the parish to be 38,792.

“There are 11,526 voters eligible to vote for City Judge,” Meyer also added.

Voters who require assistance during Early Voting or on Election Day are reminded to bring a physician’s certificate or excuse stating what type of assistance and the reason that they require assistance. This document must be given to the either Registrar of Voters or the Commissioner in charge to be delivered to the Registrar. The person has a choice either to bring someone with them for assistance, or to receive help from one of the commissioners present.

“If the assistance will be required permanently, a document must be left with the Commissioner to be put on file,” informed Meyer.
