It wasn’t the way they wanted to start their season, but the LA Heat, a summer league softball team composed of St. Edmund players, fell 4-3 to the Eunice Elite Tuesday.

It wasn’t the opponent they were expecting, either. Jennings, their scheduled opponent, bowed out, so LA Heat invited Elite, a traveling softball team based in Eunice, with several wins already under their belts, to step in for a scrimmage game.

“We got to see where we are, what we need to work on, and get the jitters out, so that was good of them (Elite) to come out and play us,” LA Heat Coach Louise Johnson said afterwards.

LA Heat’s junior varsity team’s inexperience showed in the first of two games, as Elite cruised to a 22-5 victory after the coaches called it quits at the end of the fourth inning.

It did give the LA Heat coaches the opportunity to try players in several different positions, and learn their strengths and weaknesses.

The varsity players’ experience helped in the second game, as Brittany Fontenot took the mound, limiting Elite to four earned runs.

Elite scored one run and loaded the bases before Fontenot was able to close the door on the top half of the first inning with a strikeout.

LA Heat took the lead in the second half with two runs, as Fontenot and Caroline Aguillard were driven home by Lexie Johnson’s two-RBI single.

Elite retook the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs in the second inning, and adding an insurance run in the top of the fourth.

LA Heat narrowed the point gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Ashley LaFleur singled, advanced to second on Fontenot’s sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored on Caroline Aguillard’s RBI single.

But LA Heat’s hopes for a tying run were dashed when Aguillard was put out for the third out of the inning while attempting to steal third base.

LA Heat will travel to Sacred Heart of Ville Platte tonight for a 5 p.m. game.
