EP deputy found deceased

An investigation is being conducted into the death of an Evangeline Parish deputy, who was found dead early Saturday morning, December 20.

Details were sketchy at press time. Sheriff Eddie Soileau said no foul play is suspected in the death of Deputy Jeremy Carter, 22, who was found after he was involved in a foot pursuit of suspects who allegedly were using a vehicle without authorization.

Soileau said his department received a call about the use of a vehicle by an unauthorized person. Deputies spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The subjects inside the vehicle jumped out of the vehicle and ran. Carter gave chase and was later found dead after he failed to respond to calls from dispatchers.

Soileau said the department is awaiting autopsy results to determine what caused Carter’s death. They do not believe foul play was involved in the deputy’s death. Carter joined the department approximately seven weeks ago.
