Erath hires new head football coach

ERATH - For the first time in a long time, Erath High School has a new head football coach.

At its Thursday meeting, the Vermilion Parish School Board approved the hiring of Destin Dieterich to replace long-time Bobcats coach Jacob Byler.

Erath Principal Francis Touchet selected Dieterich after a lengthy search following the announcement by Byler in late October that he would not return to Erath for a 23rd season. Touchet formed a search committee and after interviewing and going over several candidates in December, Dieterich emerged from that process as the next coach.

“I’m excited,” said Dieterich. “I am looking forward to it.

“I have prepared for becoming a head coach for a long time.”

Dieterich has worked as an assistant coach since joining the Crowley staff in 1996. He went to Notre Dame from ‘97-2000, when he was part of the Pioneers’ title team. He spent one year in Welsh, his alma mater. He has coached at Lafayette High (2002-2006) and for the past two seasons has served as defensive coordinator at St. Martinville.

In his years as a coach, Dieterich has learned under Lewis Cook, Carroll Delahoussaye and Dutton Wall, among others. That was a plus according to Touchet.

“He brings that experience,” said Touchet. “Those coaches gave positive reviews of him.”

Dieterich will begin his first day as coach Monday. He plans to look over things and meet with players and coaches. As far as a slow start to the job, that will not be an option.

“I don’t think you have any choice,” said Dieterich, “but to hit the ground running.”
