Estelle Johnston Williams
Estelle Johnston Williams, born in Rayne, Louisiana on September 29, 1922, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2009. Her deceased parents, W. G. and Celine Johnston, were residents of Rayne.
After graduating from Rayne High School in 1939, Estelle continued her education at South Western Louisiana Institute (USL) and graduated with a B. S. in Education in 1943. Her first teaching assignment was in Orange, Texas, where she met her best friend, “Tody” Gentry, Aunt Tody, who resides in Corpus Christi, Texas. And, both soon met and married the loves of their lives, Commander Hamilton Gentry (Uncle Ham) (deceased) and Clyde William (Bill) Williams (deceased). The story goes that one sunny day while driving on a nearby highway in Rayne, Bill saw Estelle pass in a car, turned around and gave chase. He caught her! They were married in June 1945 and over the next 13 years, she gave birth to five children, taught first grade and was active in her teachers’ sorority, community activities and her church. She was a wonderful and delightful teacher, always giving of herself to her students and their parents. She would see many in Corpus, and they would always hug her and say how much they loved and appreciated her. Estelle, a member of the Teachers’ Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, enjoyed her various roles throughout many years and loved being with her friends. She retired in 1983 and was named Teacher of the Year in the Corpus Christi Independent School District.
Estelle was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. W. J. Johnston and wife, Audrey Johnston, New Orleans; Guy Johnston and wife, Mary Etta, Rayne; Al Johnston and wife, Vernell, Rayne; brother, Harris Johnston, Gueydan, and sister, Barbara Johnston Sonnier, New Orleans. Joyce Johnston, wife of Harris, resides in Rayne. Estelle is survived by her children; daughter, Joanie Williams Newberry and husband, John, Austin, Texas; daughter, Carolyn Williams Riley, Porter, Texas; son, Richard Osborn Williams and wife, Carol, Houston, Texas; daughter, Ginger Williams Dieter and husband, James, Shanghai, China, and son, Clyde William (Billy) William, Austin, Texas; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was always cooking a meal for someone and she and Bill would open their home to many friends and family members. While she loved our daddy, she shared her heart with so many people. Her smile would light up a room and bring joy to others.
We will miss our mother very much and are thankful that she did not suffer in her passing as she slept peacefully. While we will miss her on this earth, we know that our daddy is telling everyone in heaven “this is my vieja”, give her a big kiss and hug and know they will be so happy to see each other once again.
Our Love to our Mother, Joanie, Carolyn, Ginger and Billy.
