Evangeline Mile a wide open affair at Evangeline Downs
Opelousas – A talented and evenly matched group on nine, including Sonoma Cat & Missed the Prom, one-two finishers in the Oak Hall Stakes here at Evangeline Downs last month, are set to square off in the 22nd running of the $200,000 Evangeline Mile, the richest race of the spring/summer thoroughbred season on Saturday evening at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino.
Sonoma Cat, an impeccably bred four-year-old Storm Cat colt has been installed at the 3/1 morning-line favorite off his gutsy victory in the Oak Hall. Making his local debut after winning an entry-level allowance event at Churchill Downs in his prior start, the Steve Asmussen trainee was able to save ground while tracking pacesetters Missed the Prom and Gowden Mile thru quick fractions before angling out at the top of the stretch and wearing down a stubborn Missed the Prom for the win in that seven furlong event. Owned by Jess Jackson’ s Stonestreet Stables, Sonoma Cat will break from post position four and will once again be ridden by Randall Toups.
In addition to Missed the Prom, who won the John Henry Stakes at the one mile distance here at Evangeline in April, 2008 stakes winners Ide Like a Double, Castle Berry Road, and Fass Feat are also in the line-up in what promises to be one of the most competitive running’s of the “Mile”.
Marvel Wood, who earned a eye-popping 107 Beyer speed figure in winning a conditioned allowance event at Louisiana Downs in his first start since shipping from the West Coast, and Got the Last Laugh, well beaten in the Presque Isle Mile in his last start, but multiple stakes placed this season, are two others who will attract plenty of attention with bettors.
Carded as the 9th race on Saturday’s eleven-race program, the approximate post time is 9:48pm central time.
