Faulk, Renard pick up honors
Jake Faulk is at the heart of the Kaplan Pirates’ defense. Jorey Renard is a versatile weapon in the Delcambre Panthers’ offensive machine.
Both players shone in wins Friday night. As a result, Faulk and Renard of the Acadiana Ford/Abbeville Meridional Players of the Week.
Faulk, a senior linebacker, stepped up his already stellar game in the Pirates’ 20-14 win at Rayne. He collected eight solo tackles, assisted on four others and picked off one pass.
“He is definitely a leader of our defense,” said Kaplan head coach Brent Indest. “People tend to rally around because he is an emotional type player.
“We played great defense as a whole, but every time we needed a big play, he was the guy who stepped up and got it done.”
Faulk helped the Pirates (3-1) hold Rayne to five first downs and 104 total yards. For his effort, Faulk is the Defensive Player of the Week.
If Faulk is Ray Lewis to the Pirates, then Jorey Renard is Reggie Bush to the Delcambre Panthers. The versatile-as-a-BlackBerry Renard totaled 125 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Panthers’ 47-14 win at North Central. The victory helped the Panthers move to 2-2 on the season.
“He played split end, halfback, full back, and returned some kicks for us,” said Delcambre head coach Darcy Delcambre of the multifaceted Renard.
Renard can gain on the ground -- 66 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. He can be a big-play target, too -- two catches for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Most of all, Renard is one piece of the puzzle in a talented backfield for Delcambre.
“Having Jorey back there with Lane (Reaux) and Kyle (Romero),” said Delcambre, “makes calling plays easier because defenses cannot key on just one guy.”
