Fire department receives equipment
Fire Chief Ted Demoruelle, who serves as chief for the city and District Two, announced the department has received new state-of-of-the-art SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) equipment which meets new NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines. Demoruelle said the department and district received an $85,000 grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, which is a 95-to-five percent matching grant. The city and fire district each put up $2,076.25 for this equipment and the rest came from the grant. The new SCBA masks contain a voice amplifier inside the mask which allows firefighters to speak to each other. With older equipment, the firefighters either remove the mask to speak to each other or spoke with a voice muffled by the mask. This made communication extremely difficult while fighting fires. Demoruelle said the new equipment also features a meter inside the mask which displays how much air a firefighter has left in his tank. The equipment will also alert other firefighters when a man goes down. After 20 seconds of no movement by a firefighter wearing the equipment, Demoruelle said a beeping and flashing device will alert others that a firefighter is down. One set of SCBA equipment now costs $4,153.25. He said this definitely helps to improve the city and district’s equipment, which also can be used for fire rating purposes. He said equipment will be put at each station in Ville Platte, Faubourg, Belaire Cove and Chataignier.
