Former Northside coach lands at VC

ABBEVILLE – Former Northside Christian boys’ basketball coach Byron Starks is on the move again.

Following a five-year stint at Northside Christian, Starks resigned his position following the 2007 season to take an assistant coaching position at his alma mater, UL-Lafayette.

Starks, a former standout for the Ragin Cajuns during his collegiate playing days, made another career change last week when he was introduced as the new head coach at Vermilion Catholic.

“I am excited about it,” said Starks. “It is a good opportunity for me. It is a school with some good tradition.”

Starks will replace Leon Veal, who left VC after two seasons to take a job in his hometown of Houma.

Starks is the third addition to VC’s coaching staff since May after the school hired Craig Beverlin to take over the football program and Daniel McMurtry to take over baseball.

“We feel fortunate, just like with the other coaches we have hired,” said VC athletic director Kim Guidry. “We are lucky to get who we did.

“Byron is a quality coach and I think our kids and our community will be excited.”

Starks, who also runs his own organization, Building Better Boys, said his game plan at VC will be the same as it has always been.

“I have always had the same philosophy,” said Starks. “You play solid defense and, of course, you need to have more points than your opponent at the end. You put the talent you have in the best position to win.”
