Former school board member passes away

CROWLEY – Eulogy will be conducted on May 16, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Donald R. Burnette officiating, for Wadie Helen Bias, 87, who died May 5, 2008 in Crowley.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

Interment will be in the Branch Cemetery.

As a proud American, she was actively involved in serving the public as a remarkable leader. In 1999, the Lafayette Advertiser included her among the top ten women featured in their prestigious edition “Acadiana Women: Putting Their Stamp on America.”

She was a faithful member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church until her health began to fail. She was active in the Sunday School, Youth Department, and was a member of the Senior choir. She was also among the first members of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church Council.

In community involvement she served as: secretary of the first Voter’s League of West Crowley, spearheaded voter registration and was instrumental in seating two blacks on City Council; member of Committee of Concerned; board chairperson of Crowley Day Care Center, a former member of the Crowley Branch of National Association of University Women, a former member of Excelsior Chapter Order #84, a former member of Crowley Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta; a former member of Parish of Acadia Federal Credit Union; a former member of the Acadia Parish School Board, one of the two first blacks and the first woman to be elected to that board and she was involved in LA Girls State Unit 506.

Ms. Bias is survived by Naomi Thompson Zinnerman, Ida Jimella Zinnerman, Shanice, James and Jamal Zinnerman, Las Vegas, Nev.; Rebecca Thompson Handy; Crowley; grandchildren Henry Peter Handy, III, (Karlaina) Lafayette; Wadie Louise Handy, Daniel J. N. Solomon, Jr., Malik Devereaux Handy and Braylin Lawrence Henry, Crowley and host of godchildren, relatives and friends.
