Fournerat heads Bearcats on All-District team
By: LANCE REED
After taking on a very tough non-district schedule and battling through injuries, the Basile Bearcats ended the season with a 5-4 record.
The Cats won the District 5-1A championship. Unfortunately, the Cats did draw one of the best teams in Class 1A in their first round of the playoffs. The Cats fell to West St. John, the defending state runner-up, in the opening round.
When the All-District 5-1 team was selected, Basile was well represented across the board. The BHS team did especially well on offense.
Senior Jon Fournerat was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player. The wide receiver caught nearly 75 percent of the passes during the seaosn and helped to keep opposing defenses from keying on the BHS running backs. Fournerat also played quaterback, fullback and linebacker during his four-year stint at Basile High School.
Joining Fournerat on the first team offense are four other Bearcats. Senior offensive tackle Eathen Dubroc was a three-year starter. The young man developed over the years and became of the best lineman in school history. Fellow offensive lineman Conner Bergeron was named to the squad. The junior center did a great job during his first year as a starter.
After missing several games with an injury, senior tailback Derrick Thomas bounced back to have a pretty good year. Thomas ran for nearly 900 yards on 125 carries. He also scored 10 touchdowns for Basile. With graduation upon him, the Cats will have a big task when they try to replace him.
Junior quarterback Fabian Bellard was named the Athlete on offense. The second-year signal caller kept the Cats going during non-district schedule when injuries kept key players off the field. Bellard, who played fullback and wide receiver his freshman year, has come a long way for Basile.
Two players were named to the first team defense. Fournerat’s play at linebacker earned him his second straight first team defense selection. He was among the top tacklers on the Basile team. Joining Fournerat on the first defensive team is senior Gavin Fontenot. The young man did a great job of keeping opponents from scoring. Fontenot’s never quit attitude always made the young man fun to watch.
Three Bearcats were selected to the second offensive team. Senior offensive guard Mason Ortego played a strong year for Basile. Tight end Steven LeBleu, a junior, made his second appearance on the AD team. Senior running back Jacob Bergeaux had a super game against Hamliton Christian in what was the District 5-1A championship game. He was selected to the second team.
Five Bearcats got their names on the second defensive team. Linebackers Nick J. Bertrand and Nick K. Bertrand were each named to the squad. LeBleu made the squad as a defensive end. Senior defensive back and kick returner, Josh Cornerly was selected as both positions. Bellard was named as the punter on the second team.
After watching his team fall to 0-4 at one point, Basile Head Coach Tony Bertrand turned things around for his team. He guided the Bearcats to a 5-0 district record and an outright district championship. This was Bertand’s second year as a head coach at Basile High School. He was an easy choice for District 5-1A Coach of the Year.
Congratulations go out to all of the Basile football players who received recognition on the All-District 5-1A team.
