Fourteenth Annual Scare on the Square

The Vermilion Parish Library is pleased to announce the fourteenth annual Scare on the Square, which will take place on Thursday, October 30th.

Costume contest registration will begin at 5:00p.m. in Magdalen Square, which will continue until 6:00p.m.  Costume judging will take place from 5:15 to 6:15p.m. Trophies will be awarded to the most beautiful, most original, and scariest costumes in three age categories: Ages 0-3, Ages 4-7, and Ages 8-12. There is also a category for best-costumed group; there are no age restrictions in this category except that the group must include at least one child and be accompanied by at least one adult.  Winners will be announced immediately following the storyteller.

Following the costume judging, from 6:15-7:00 p.m., Award-winning storyteller Mike Anderson will be in the gazebo performing spooky stories for children of all ages.  The Vermilion Parish Library is able to bring Mike to Abbeville though a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Acadiana Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Southern Arts Federation and the Louisiana State Arts Council.

From 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., costumed children will be invited to “Trick-or-Treat” with participating businesses along Magdalen Square.  As is customary, we request that only costumed children 12 years and younger participate in “Trick-or-Treating.” Look for bright orange signs in the windows of downtown participants.  The generous support of these businesses makes this program possible, so be sure to thank them!

We are excited to provide the families of Abbeville with a fun-filled, safe Halloween experience.  For the safety of our young ghosts and goblins, please leave all alcoholic beverages and pets at home.  Join the Vermilion Parish Library, and participating businesses, for an exciting evening for the whole family.  See gremlins, ghosts, and goblins of all shapes haunting Magdalen Square in an exciting night!  For more information please call the Abbeville Branch Library at 893-2674 or visit our website at www.vermilion.lib.la.us.
