Fourth quarter surge lifts Pickering past Iota in 2A playoffs

LEESVILLE – The Iota Lady Bulldogs saw their hopes of advancing to the Class AA quarterfinals vanish in one quarter of play Monday against Pickering.

Iota (26-8) battled the Lady Red Devils to a 38-38 tie after three quarters but the Lady Bulldogs were unable to get anything going offensively in the fourth and fell, 50-38.

“The game was extremely physical, which favored them, and we were just exhausted and beat up,” said Baggett of his squad heading into the fourth quarter. “We just couldn’t get anything going in that last quarter.”

Pickering’s physicality and much taller front court also aided in the victory as the Lady Devils controlled the boards while their defense forced the Lady Dogs into countless turnovers on the night.

“We just had way too many tunrovers and we gave up too many offensive rebounds,” said Baggett. “Despite all the problems we had, we still had our chances to win the game. We fought hard, but I think we just wore down.”

Iota was led by junior guard Allison Baggett with 17 points 10 rebounds. Adalie Wriborg followed with seven points; Caroline Hebert and Anna Lege scored five each and Candace Sensat scored three.
