Fragile shortcut

ST. MARTINVILLE – A typical scene on St. Martinville’s Main Street. How typical? That’s what the City Council wants to know.

Councilman Craig Prosper – saying heavy truck traffic damages majestic old buildings erected when only hooves pounded dirt – offered a resolution at Monday’s meeting to ask DOTD for a study of how many trucks pass in a given time. Prosper said he thinks trucks are using La. 96 and La. 31 to avoid the scale on I-10. Mayor Thomas Nelson said the data might help propel action on a bypass for St. Martinville. Meanwhile, maybe Parish Government would consent to open Capritto-40 Arpent Road to trucks as a temporary bypass, Prosper said. The council also tacked on a request for an overlay of La. 31 downtown.
