Garden Club announces RF Door Contest winners
CROWLEY - The Crowley Garden Club announced the winners of the Rice Festival Door Decorating Contest on stage at the International Rice Festival, Friday, October 16, 2009. The winning doors were selected from 53 entries created by community enthusiasts from around the city, who responded to the opportunity to support the International Rice Festival and promote the rice industry.
“Well, we loved them all, and agonized over choosing the winners out of 53 entries. But decided we did!” said Nancy Broadhurst, Garden Club member and door decorating contest chairman. Broadhurst also said one of the highlights of the contest was seeing the impressive flow of creativity emerging from our community. Those who received award ribbons were: In the residential category First Place, Diane Francis; Second Place, Kitty Hensgens; Third Place, Cindy Haynes; Designers Choice Award, Janet McFarlin; Honorable Mention, Rhonda Hamic, Rita LeJeune, Sumar Gardiner, Faye Hoffpauer and Colene Barbin.
Winners in the business category included: First Place, First United Methodist Church; Second Place, Spa Maison; Third Place, Adams Apple; Designers Choice Award, Bank of Commerce; Honorable Mention, Crowley Rice Cottage, Stan Gall Jr. Stained Glass, Select Physical Therapy, Grand Opera House of the South and Southwind. Garden Club committee members and judges were: Betty Miller, Brittany Faulk, Keshia Rue, Sharon Core and Mitzi LeJeune.
“The response to the contest was fantastic with entries throughout the Crowley community,” stated Gene Williams, rice festival chairman. Williams continued “this contest provided a unique way for our community to become a part of the rice festival and we thank everyone who participated in making it such a huge success.” The Crowley Garden Club, a 61 year old social, gardening, and horticultural group sponsored the contest.
