Garden Club sets Rice Festival Door Decorating Contest rules, deadline

CROWLEY - The Crowley Garden Club and the International Rice Festival are set to hold the Rice Festival’s 5th Annual Front Door Decorating Contest.

The competition will be organized and judged by members of the Crowley Garden Club, a 64-year-old volunteer non-profit gardening, beautification, conservation, educational organization.

Garden Club members Patti Lawrence and Nancy Broadhurst will serve as chairs of this year’s contest.

According to Lawrence and Broadhurst, “The objective is two-fold. One, to promote the interest of floral design and two, to increase awareness and promotion of the International Rice Festival and the rice industry.”

Crowley residents and businesses are encouraged to take part by decorating their front doors with wreaths and/or swags using rice in any form.

Lawrence and Broadhurst have summarized rules: There must be an emphasis on rice. Thus, rice must be a component of the front door decoration. An entry using an existing fall wreath with rice in any form qualifies.

The design may use fresh, silk or dried material. The design does not have to reflect the festival theme, but it can be incorporated if you choose. Door decorations should be suitable for public viewing, eye catching and creative.

Judging will be based on overall design, originality and creativity.

There is no entry fee, and entry forms can be found on the official Rice Festival website – http://www.ricefestival.com/.

All entries must be received by no later than Oct. 7. Judging will take place Oct. 10 and winners will be publicly announced on Oct. 13.

Beautiful custom three-streamer starburst rosette award ribbons with the International Rice Festival logo will be given to first, second and third place winners in both the residential and business categories.

Winners will be announced on the main stage during the Friday festival activities and will be submitted for publication in the Crowley Post Signal and the official International Rice Festival Cookbook.

According to Gene Williams, International Rice Festival Chairman, “We continue to enjoy our working partnership with the Crowley Garden Club and are fortunate to have the Garden Club sponsor this event in the promotion of the festival as well as the rice industry. This is always a much welcome contest for our festival because everyone can participate to honor our local festival and rice farmers.”
