Homegrown country star Garland Thompson (GT), and Kaplan native, recently performed hits from his recently released and highly acclaimed CD “The First Time”, at the Richard Sale Barn.

Thompsons’ hit CD, “The First Time”, was highlighted at the concert.

This long awaited premiere CD will quickly become a favorite of his fans and feature selections such as “Someone Move the Bandstand (a little Closer to the Door)”.

He was surrounded with a range of unbelievably talented guest musicians that delighted, entertained and “injected some good ole country feeling” in the show.

The decision to finally record “The First Time” in the studio was a long hard road and a testimony to the late gifted songwriter, Tim Sonnier.

Sonnier was not only Thompson’s brother-in-law, but a very close friend, as well.

The chance to put his tunes down on a CD was something that Thompson wanted not only for a larger public audience, but for his family as well.

Followers and fans of Thompson have always enjoyed his tremendous naturally talented singing voice.

The influences of the late Hank Williams, George Jones and Merle Haggard can be heard in all of his songs. His natural talent and love of music was demonstrated at an early age.

Growing up in Kaplan, Thompson began his career singing along with records of his heroes Williams and Haggard and was quickly mentored and supported by the Louisiana legend JB Pere ( also from Kaplan).

Pere later invited Thompson to perform on his then Saturday television show and the die was cast.
