Generator program funded for parish

Evangeline Parish has been awarded a portion of the $30,000,000 set aside for the statewide generator program.

Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds from the federal government have been allocated for the purchase of generators statewide to mitigate against storm-related power issues.

“The Evangeline Parish Police Jury will receive $281,254 for the purchase of generators to provide emergency power during storms to local governments and other providers of essential services,” said Senator Eric LaFleur and Representative Bernard LeBas, both members of the Louisiana Joint Committee on the Budget, which recently approved the generator program.

“A 150kw trailer mounted generator can cost above $50,000 each. If they are trailer mounted, however, you can move them around where they are needed and get by with fewer units,” added LaFleur. “As long as major water pumps and lift stations are appropriately wired, the generators can be moved and plugged in at locations where they are needed. During a storm, this will help local governments avoid water and sewage issues,” said LaFleur.

The program is designed to assist parish and local governments with securing vital health and safety facilities and services, for example, police and fire stations, hospital and related medical facilities, water and sewage treatment facilities. It will require local governments identify and prioritize critical facilities in their storm plans and have them retrofitted for the use of the generators.

“The generators can be used to assist health care facilities who experience power problems. These generators can be moved and quickly put into action where problems arise and provide energy to critical areas until power can be restored,” said LeBas.

“These storms are difficult to deal with but this program should assist local government in providing resources to insure the preservation of basic services to our citizens,” said LeBas.
