Gents pick up victories in summer basketball league
JENNINGS – The Crowley Gents’ haven’t had a whole lot of things go right for them during their 2013 summer league basketball camps.
The Gents were winless on the summer heading into Thursday’s doubleheader at Jennings and to make matters worse, their first opponent of the day was unbeaten Lacassine.
Fortunately, both of the team’s streaks ended there.
The Gents jumped out to an early lead and held off a late charge by the Cardinals to slip away with a 44-42 victory.
“We played more together tonight than we have in all of our other games,” said CHS basketball coach Derrick Boone. “What plagued us in all of our losses was that we had a lot of turnovers and no continuity.
“Tonight, we cut back on the turnovers and we played more team basketball.”
The Gents closed out their summer campaign one game later with a 36-25 victory over Lake Arthur.
“It was big for our guys to end the summer league with those wins,” said Boone. “That’s big for their confidence because you could tell they were kind of down. It was a huge step for us.”
Against Lacassine, Crowley went on an 8-0 run to start the contest and led by as many as 14 in the first of two 18-minute halves. Bryston Domino poured in eight points during that stretch and Jacquo Price scored seven.
Mylon Stevens and Marcus Williams each pitched in six points in the second half as the Gents withstood a late run to hold on for the victory.
Price and Steven each finished with 10 points while Domino and Williams each had eight. Grant Trahan and Darrell Milson rounded out the scoring with four points each.
Price also paced the Gents in the victory over Lake Arthur. He scored seven points in each half and finished with a game-high 14 points.
Stevens added eight point in the victory and Domino had five. Williams and Milson each finished with four.
The Gents, who return just four varsity players from last year’s squad, will kick off the 2013-14 season on Dec. 4 when they participate in the Iowa tournament.
