Gents top Pios in MHS Spectacular
MIDLAND – The Crowley Gents advanced to the Midland Spectacular Tournament loser’s bracket finals Monday with a 72-53 rout of the Notre Dame Pioneers.
The Gents (7-6) will take on either Lake Arthur or Kinder today at 1 o’clock. The Pios (3-11) were eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
Crowley jumped out to an early 21-9 lead in the first quarter behind 13 points from standout Jerrell Andrus.
The Gents defensive pressure continued to cause Notre Dame problems in the second frame, limiting the Pios to just nine points and helping CHS to take a commanding 40-18 advantage at the break.
Notre Dame’s Taylor Thibodeaux scored 13 points in the third quarter to help cut the lead to 57-39 heading into the final stanza, but Crowley outscored Notre Dame 15-14 over the final eight minutes.
Andrus led all scorers on the day with 30 points. Therion Beverly and Tuskani Figaro followed with 12 points each. Henterrio Guidry and Michael Harmon each pitched in six points and Donavon Morris and Kaleb Cormier each scored three.
Taylor Thibodeaux paced Notre Dame with a team-high 28 points. He was followed by Will Faulk with eight points; Morgan Allen, six; Kane Thibodeaux and Stu Cook, four each and Drew Trahan, three.
In other action involving Crowley teams, the Notre Dame Lady Pios also advanced to the loser’s bracket finals on the girls’ side with a 48-39 victory over Gueydan.
The Lady Pios took a slim 21-19 advantage at the half before outscoring Gueydan 12-7 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 33-26.
Notre Dame connected on eight of their 12 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Taylor Simon led the Lady Pios with 16 points while Celia Charles and Lexi Trosclair each scored 10.
Also contributing in the victory were Mallory Chaisson with six points, Alex Boulet with four and Peyton Miller with two.
The Lady Pios took on Opelousas Catholic yesterday. Results of that game were not available at press time.
In other tournament action, the Midland Lady Rebels fell to Mamou, 61-49.
Morgan Clement led the Lady Rebels with 16 points and Haley Guidry scored 13. Katelyn Woods added five points, Courtney LeJeune, Hannah Fremaux and Melody Hebert each had four and Carisa Richard had three.
Midland will take on either Rayne or Chaudrant today at 2:30 p.m. Mamou advanced to tonight’s championship game with the victory.
Rayne advanced to the boys’ finals this evening with a 59-57 victory over Acadiana. The Wolves will take on the winner of last night’s late game between Midland and Jennings.
Rayne’s Darius Bonnom scored 20 points in the victory and Paul Charles had 11.
