Gilford Joseph Stelly
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne, Louisiana, for Gilford Joseph Stelly, 73, who died Saturday, August 15, 2009, at 4:45 p.m. at Lafayette General Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana after a brief battle with cancer. Father Bill Roskinski, pastor Of St. Joseph Catholic Church, was the
celebrant of the Mass with Deacon Tim Ledet assisting.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and honorably discharged in 1960. He was employed as a maintenance supervisor by Sunbeam Bakery for 20 years until its clsoing, then worked at Evangeline Bakery for another 20 years until his retirement.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, he enjoyed playing cards with friends, visiting with family, and his favorite pastime was gardening. He was very proud of the yard he and his wife created with many different types of plants and flowers.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Celida Johnson Stelly of Rayne; three sons, Glenn Stelly and wife, Jackie, of Mire; Carroll Stelly and wife, Diane, of Rayne, and Jimmy Stelly and wife, Angel, of Rayne; three daughters, Elaine Venable and husband, Ronnie, of Rayne, Jeannette Lopez and husband, Rudy, of La Porte, Texas, and Kristi Peltier and husband, Phil, of Rayne; 12 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Wilbert “Buster” Stelly and wife, Mary Lou, of Rayne; Horace Stelly and wife, Gloria, of Duson, and Herman Stelly and wife. Rose “Sis”, of Rayne; and one sister, Della Mae Alleman and husband, Merlin, of Rayne.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Annie Stelly of Rayne; his maternal grandparents, Jessie and Victoria Venable; and his paternal grandparents, Edward and Emily Stelly; and three grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley Babineaux and Jaden Stelly.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed Monday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and continue on Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. until time of services,
A Rosary was recited on Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
Pallbearers were his sons, Glenn Stelly, Carroll Stelly, and Jimmy Stelly and his son-in-laws, Ronnie Venable, Phil Peltier and Rudy Lopez.
Honorary pall-bearers were his grandsons, Ron Venable, Jacob Venable. Jeremy Stelly, Cory Bab-ineaux and Joshua Stelly; and Duke Schultz.
