The Welsh High School Greyhounds gained the top seed in District 5-2A by nipping the Lake Arthur High School Fighting Tigers by a score of 70-66 on Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the Jennings High School Gymnasium.
The Greyhounds rallied in the first quarter to take a 21-18 lead, as the Tigers self-destructed in the last 40 seconds, turning the ball over on their last four trips down the court.
The pace of the game remained fast and furious in the second period, as Welsh went on a 22-19 eight-minute run to claim a 43-37 lead at the half time break.
Key baskets by Dustin Wilridge and Dreylin Bias kept the Tigers at bay, as Welsh continued to penetrate the lane for easy lay ups.
Lake Arthur’s D’Angelo Thompson proved to be a heavy load against the Greyhounds, as the big center used nice post-up skills to pop in several easy, short jumpers inside the paint.
In the pivotal third period, the Tiger defense keyed an 18-12 run that allowed the Tigers to tie the score at 55-55, entering the fourth and final quarter of play.
The lead changed hands several times in the final frame, as both teams struggled for the knock-out blow. But Lake Arthur turned the ball over four consecutive times in the last two minutes, allowing Welsh to score six straight points to win the quarter 15-11 and claim the 70-66 district victory.
Lake Arthur placed three players in double figures, as Darius Mitchell, Durrell Prudhomme, and Thompson hit for 16, 13, and 12 points, respectively. Brad Armentor added nine, while Nick Klein tallied eight. Colby LaVergne and Auldon Robinson finished the Tigers’ scoring with six and two points, respectively. Wilridge and Bias led Welsh in scoring with 29 and 16 points.
With the playoff win, Welsh grabbed the top spot in District 5-2A and improved to 14-11 on the season. Lake Arthur fell to 18-8 with the heartbreaking defeat.
