Gueydan ballpark gets lights

GUEYDAN - The Gueydan Town Council, with the help of Sellers and Associates, are working to install lights above the ladies softball field within the next three months.

The initial plan to light the field came back in 2002, when the town received a grant to build a basketball court and to light the field at the park. But after the cost of the court, there wasn’t enough money for the field.

“The town has researched several options to complete the project over the past few years,” said Todd Vincent, Vice President of Sellers and Associates. “But Mayor Bob Hensgens has had the most success in finding a solution.”

According to Hensgens, the Gueydan Recreation Association approached him in December of 2007 to request that he find a way to light the field. Hensgens and the aldermen made the project one of their top priorities.

“The field is very important to the community,” says Hensgens. “Not only does the Gueydan Recreation Association league use it, but the high school softball team plays there as well.”

The Gueydan town council reduced the cost of the project by furnishing equipment like poles and a conduit. Then they sent the project out for re-bid and received a new estimate of $42,000. Although there is only $13,500 from the initial grant, the town council plans to complete the project.

“We received $7,000 from the Office of State Parks,” says Hensgens. “The town council is going to provide the additional funds.”

The town council has also asked Sellers and Associates to write a grant to have a playground installed by the walking track near the Civic Center. If they receive the grant, the city of Gueydan plans to contribute 50 percent towards the cost of the playground.

“The people of Gueydan spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors,” says Hensgens. “I’d like to make their experience as pleasant as possible.”
