H1N1 vaccine in Crowley
By Paula Guillory
The H1N1 Flu vaccine is currently available at The Medicine Shoppe in Crowley. According to Brandi Freed, R. Ph., “we have received 400 doses and we’re ready to administer vaccines to those who are in the target group.”
This group consists of pregnant women, care takers of infants under six months of age, health care and emergency personnel, individuals aged 6 months to 24-years-old and people aged 25-years-old to 64 years-old that have chronic medical conditions such as asthma or diabetes.
Freed has both the intramuscular and the intranasal vaccine available. She explained, “the injected vaccine is inactive whereas, the nasal form is a live virus so there are some criteria that have to be met in order to receive the nasal version.” The chronically ill, pregnant woman and children that frequently cough or wheeze can not receive the nasal vaccine.
She will be administering the vaccine Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. until noon.
The vaccine is covered by Medicare and Medicaid as well as Humana Insurance. For individuals that are uninsured or have an insurance provider that does not cover the vaccine, a $16 administration fee will be charged.
Freed advises anyone feeling moderately to severely ill to receive the vaccine once their symptoms have presided.
