State champion Vermilion Catholic lands three on 1A All-State Team
Division IV runner-up St. Frederick and Class 1A runner-up Mangham High claimed top honors on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State football team.
Running back Kemme Weeks, of Mangham, was voted the Outstanding Offensive Player. Weeks, who ran for 1,898 yards and 24 touchdowns, was the engine that powered the Dragons to the 1A state championship game.
St. Frederick advanced to its first-ever state final. Warrior linebacker Will Daniels was named the Outstanding Defensive Player and St. Frederick coach Jeff Tannehill was named Coach of the Year.
Daniels recorded 186 tackles on the season, including 19 tackles for a loss and four forced fumbles. After taking over at St. Frederick, in Monroe, in March, Tannehill had the Warriors in the Mercedez-Benz Superdome for the first time.
Rounding out the running backs are West St. John’s Jeremy Jackson (1,704 yards, 25 touchdowns) and Elton’s Marcus Lemoine (2,045 yards, 21 touchdowns).
Brennan Gallet was named the first-team quarterback and highlights a strong Vermilion Catholic presence on the 1A squad. Gallet completed 159 of 261 passes for 2,590 yards and 32 touchdowns on seven interceptions.
First-team wide receivers include Pointe Coupee Central’s Delfontay Powell (1,065 yards, 17 touchdowns), Vermilion Catholic’s Connor Menard (1,126 yards, 15 touchdowns) and Southern Lab’s Curtlin Williams (1,089 yards, 14 touchdowns).
Selected to the offensive line are Jeff Fuller, Mangham; Garland Pipes, Cedar Creek; Richmond Jackson, Country Day; Kyle Zenon, Vermilion Catholic; and Miguel Deleon, Haynesville.
Named to the defensive line are Malcolm Roach, of Madison Prep, (82 tackles, 13 for loss, three forced fumbles); Trei Criff, of Mangham, (96 tackles, eight sacks); Jahmal Macklin, of Block, (60 tackles, 10 sacks); and Delmond Landry, of Ascension Catholic, (72 tackles, 21 sacks) made up the defensive line.
Joining Daniels at linebacker were Cade Harper, of Ouachita Christian, (135 tackles, 85 solo); Lance Romero, of Mangham, (128 tackles, four sacks); and Kendrick Jackson, of Haynesville, (102 tackles, 27 for loss).
The defensive backfield consists of Demarius Brass, of Delhi Charter (64 tackles, six interceptions); Jerrell Jackson, of Haynesville, (37 tackles, six interceptions); Morgan Barbo, of LaSalle, (50 tackles, six interceptions) and Andrew Kern, of Country Day (25 tackles, 5 interceptions).
Quarterback Altonio Johnson, of Pointe Coupee Central, (2,753 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, 882 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns) was named the first-team athlete. Jackson Jansen, of Country Day, (seven field goals, long of 55) and Damieon Lee, of Christian Life, (41-yard punting average) were named the kicker and punter, respectively. Basile’s Kendrick Ceaser (4 returned touchdowns) made the team as the return specialist.
