One man is dead after invading two separate homes Tuesday evening, March 3, and another is facing serious charges.
Ville Platte Police Chief Neal Lartigue said the department was notified at 11:43 p.m. that an intruder, later identified as Antonio Thomas, 19, was in a home at 715 W. Beech. Officers were being dispatched when the dispatcher understood the caller to say her daughter had been shot. Officers arrived on the scene, secured the area, and learned the daughter had not been shot, but she had shot Thomas twice. Thomas, who resided at 9 E. Beauregard, Ville Platte, later died at Ville Platte Medical Center.
Provisional Assistant Chief John B. “Chip” Matte Jr. said another man, Gavin Herbert, 18, of Ville Platte, is now in police custody in connection with this case. He said no formal charges had been filed at press time, but Herbert was facing several serious charges.
“More arrests are possible. This investigation is ongoing,” Matte said.
Authorities were still following leads and attempting to put a timeline together in this case at press time. Matte explained it appeared the motivation was robbery at this time, but they’re still investigating.
Lartigue said after officers arrived at the Beech Street residence, they learned another residence, 108 W. Hickory Street, had been invaded. He said a woman arrived home and parked in the garage. She opened her door to bring items into her home and when she turned around two male subjects, who were armed, were under the garage. They forced their way inside the house where they had tied up two girls.
Thomas was one of the male subjects. He later escorted a male from the Hickory street residence to the Beech Street residence where he was able to gain entry into that home.
Once inside the home, there was a struggle that took place in the hallway of the home. A female in the residence was able to obtain a handgun and shot the suspect twice. The intruder later died at Ville Platte Medical Center.
