I-10 crash kills one, hospitalizes eight

Early Monday morning Jan. 25, Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a fatal crash on I-10 at milepost 70, that claimed the life of an unidentified man and sent eight others to the hospital.

The unidentified man was killed when the vehicle he was driving was traveling the wrong way on I-10 and struck another vehicle head on. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner.

According to investigating troopers, on Monday, shortly after 2:30 a.m., a 1995 Mercury Cougar was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-10 near milepost 70.

A 2003 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by twenty-four-year -old Tiffany Fine of Orange, Texas, was stopped on the westbound shoulder, due to mechanical failure.

The Mercury veered from the westbound lanes and struck the Ford head on.

After impact, both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch and the Ford caught fire.

There were eight occupants in the Ford, five of whom were minors. All of the occupants were able to exit the vehicle safely.

The unidentified driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and was killed as a result of the crash.

Fine, as well as an eight-year old-minor sustained severe injuries. The other occupants of the vehicle sustained moderate injuries. They were transported to local area hospitals by Acadian Ambulance and Air Med.

Blood and urine samples were taken from the unidentified driver as well as from Fine. The samples were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicology results. Those results are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.
