Iota closes out district at Westlake

IOTA – The Saints came marching in Friday, driving the Bulldogs back to the kennel as St. Louis scored a 23-8 victory over the Iota High football team.
With the loss, Iota drops to 1-2 in District 4-3A, and 6-3 overall.
St. Louis sits at second in district with a 2-1 record; the Saints are 6-2 overall.
St. Louis drew first blood near the end of the first quarter on Dillon Berlin’s carry.
A snap over the punter’s head gave the Saints a two-point safety in the second quarter, followed by Stephen Sylvester’s 12-yard carry to give St. Louis a 16-0 lead at halftime.
Iota finally got on the board midway through the final quarter on quarterback Chad Abshire’s carry.
Abshire sailed the ball through the air to Eric Speer for the two-point conversion, keeping Bulldog hopes alive as Iota narrowed the Saints’ lead to 16-8.
However, St. Louis came back late in the final quarter, scoring a touchdown on Sylvester’s 38-yard carry to win the game.
St. Louis picked up 223 rushing yards and 31 passing yards, while limiting Iota to only 98 rushing yards as well as 88 passing yards from Abshire.
Andy Fontenot was the Bulldogs’ lead rusher with 55 yards, followed by Abshire with 38.
Sylvester rushed for 98 yards for the Saints.
Next week, the Bulldogs wrap up their regular season at undefeated Westlake (7-0, 3-0); St. Louis hosts Iowa (2-5; 0-3).
