Iota grounds out win over Patriots
LEROY -- The North Vermilion Patriots fell to the Iota Bulldogs 21-8 Friday night.
Despite the score, both teams had one thing in common, they were going to line up and run right at each other.
The Bulldogs first drive of the game set the tone for the rest of the night. They marched 60 yards on 15 plays that took eight minutes off the clock for the first score of the night.
“We knew exactly what they were going to do” said North Vermilion coach Stephen Lotief, “they just pounded it at us”.
The Patriots’ defense got a quick breather, only to head back out after a fumble on a pitch from quarterback Trey Price to Jeremy Ryder. The turnover set up a quick Bulldog touchdown on a run from seven yards out.
In the second quarter it looked as if the Patriots’ offense would start to hit its stride when Price connected with Kelvin Matthews on a 28 yard completion to the bulldog 38-yard line. Jabian Kern added an 11-yard run down to the four yard line and let Jeremy Ryder Punch it in for the Patriots’ first touchdown of the night. The Patriots cashed in on a penalty called on the extra point, which allowed Price to run it in for the two-point conversion.
After trailing 18-8 at halftime the Patriots were never able to chip away at the Bulldog lead. But an 18-yard pass from Price to Matthews with 11:56 left in the game showed signs of a comeback. But a fourth down pass to Ryder came up short, turning it over where Iota would kick a field goal from 30 yards out with 1:23 left in the fourth to seal the game.
Jabian Kern paced the Patriots with 43 yards on 12 carries, followed by Jeremy Ryder who added 39 yards on 6 carries. Trey Price was 6 of 15 for 68 yards and his main target Kelvin Matthews had four catches for 48 yards.
North Vermilion will look to bounce back as they host North DeSoto this Friday at 7 p.m..
