Iota native to compete in NCAA Regional Meet
LAFAYETTE – Former Iota High School standout Kirsten Meche will be one of eight University of Louisiana-Lafayette athletes competing at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Regionals on the UNC-A&T campus in Greensboro, N.C. this week for a spot in the National Track and Field Championships.
Meche, who earned her spot in the javelin prior to the league meet, got off a throw of 141-9 in the finals of the Sun Belt Conference Championships at North Texas earlier in the month. He best throw this season was in ULL’s Cole Lancon Twilight Meet where she placed second with a throw of 147-10 3/4.
The sophomore was a district champion and a state runnerup in the javelin during her prep days at Iota.
Meche will be joined at the regionals by teammates Jasmine Anderson and Jasmine Manuel. Anderson will run the 100-meter hurdles while Manuel will compete in the triple and long jump events.
Competing on the boy’s side in the field events will be ULL’s Chris Roy (pole vault), Garrett Harkless (discus), O’Daylon Thibeaux (triple jump), Jacob Domingue (shot put) and Jeffrey Vidacovich (high jump).
Roy won the SBC pole vault title with a leap of 17-10 1/2.
Thibeaux was the SBC Freshman of the Year after winning the conference title with a mark of 52-0 in the triple jump.
