Iota, Northside Christian advance in volleyball playoffs
It’s on to the second round for the Iota Lady Bulldogs and the Northside Christian Lady Warriors.
The two opened up the 2010 prep volleyball playoffs Thursday with impressive victories, the No. 15-seeded Lady Dogs cruising past Runnels in straight sets in a Division IV bi-district matchup and the Lady Warriors topping district rival Hamilton Christian in Division V, also in three sets.
Iota opened its match with a 25-12 victory that set the tone for the rest of the evening. A 25-9 victory followed before the Lady Dogs advanced with a 25-21 win in the third game.
The Lady Dogs were led by Laura Cart and Madison Meche. Cart logged six kills, 27 digs and one ace while Meche had six kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Gabbie Heinen added five kills, 12 digs and five aces while Heather Broussard had 16 assists, six digs and seven aces.
Other players contributing in the victory included Kelsey Doguet (1 kill, 4 digs, 2 blocks, 3 aces), Kaylee Richard (1 kill, 4 digs, 2 blocks, 3 aces), Claire LeJeune (7 assists, 3 digs), Melinda Russell (30 digs), Abigail Leonards ( 1 assits, 2 digs) and Holly Guillory (1 dig).
Iota will travel to New Orleans Monday to take on No. 2 seed McGehee. The regional contest is slated for 5:30 p.m.
In Crowley, No. 13 Northside Christian had little problem with Hamilton, knocking them off for the third time in straight sets. The Lady Warriors took the first game 25-19 and went on to win the next two, 25-13, 25-22.
Tori Clement and Mia Mier paced the Lady Warriors offense with eight kills each. Clement also had 24 digs and 5 aces while Mier had eight digs and two blocks. Desi Dietz followed with four kills, 15 digs and four blocks.
Also contributing in the victory were Natalie Hayes (2 kills, 25 digs, 2 aces), Courtney Romero (2 kills, 21 digs, 13 assists, 1 ace) and Maddison Conrad (2 kills, 7 digs, 12 assists, 1 ace).
Northside will travel to Donaldsonville Monday to take on No. 4 seed Ascension Catholic.
In other volleyball news, Division III’s No. 1 seed Notre Dame, will play host to No. 16 Livonia Monday at 6 p.m.
Notre Dame received a bye in the first round while Livonia defeated No. 17 Xavier Prep in straight sets.
All winners from the regional round will advance to the state tournament in Kenner beginning on Thursday.
