Iota, Northside pick up softball victories

CROWLEY – The Iota Lady Bulldogs and the Northside Christian Lady Warriors were both victorious Tuesday on the softball diamond.

The Lady Dogs avenged a first-round district loss to Westlake by topping the Lady Rams, 6-5, in Westlake, while the Lady Warriors rolled past Assembly Christian of New Iberia, 10-2, at their home park.

Iota (9-16, 2-3) struck for one run in each of the first five innings and led 5-3 heading into the seventh.

The Lady Bulldogs picked up a much-needed insurance run in the final frame when Carlie Thevis drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

Westlake rallied in the bottom of the inning, loading the base with one out. An Iota error led to one run before another run scored on a single to left.

With runners at second and third and two outs, Iota pitcher Lauren LeJeune got a flyout to second base to end the game.

LeJeune gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks in seven innings.

Celina Bobbett paced the Lady Dogs at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance that included a triple and a RBI.

Bobbett also had two hits, including a double and Kirsten Meche had one RBI on a solo home run. Alyssa Bobbett had one hit and LeJeune drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

Iota will be in action again today when the Lady Dogs play host to Iowa at 5 p.m.

In Crowley, Northside (12-9-1, 3-0) did all of its damage in the first two innings as the Lady Warriors scored four runs in the first and six in the second before holding on for the victory.

Lindsey Reed and Ashley Abshire each drove in a run in the first inning and two more runs crossed the plate on passed balls.

Sarah Ancelet came through in the second inning with a two-run, bases-loaded single. With runners on second and third, Reed picked up two more RBI with a single to center. Abshire also logged another RBI in the frame as well as Brandy Carrier, who drove in Sarah Sonnier with a single.

ACS scored one run in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Abshire and Ancelet led the Lady Warriors with two hits. Carrier, Reed and Mandy Johnston each had one hit.

Johnston picked up the victory on the mound, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. She struck out nine.

The Lady Warriors will be in action again today when they travel to Jennings to take on Bethel at 4 p.m.
