Iota trio earns All-District honors

CROWLEY – Moving up in classification is tough for most teams no matter what district a team is placed in.

It is even tougher when you are thrown in one of the best leagues in Class AAA.

That was the case this past year when Iota moved from Class AA to AAA and was thrown in a league that included defending state champion Iowa along with perennial powers St. Louis and Jennings as well as up and coming Westlake.

Iota did not win a game in league play but did manage to play Westlake and Jennings close at the end of the season.

For their efforts, Iota’s Eric Spear, Steven Reed and Trenton Pickett were each selected to the 4-AAA All-District team recently announced by the league’s coaches.

Spear, a junior third baseman, made the squad as a utility player after hitting .376 in league play with five doubles and six runs driven in.

Pickett, a junior shortstop and leadoff hitter for the Bulldogs, hit .319 with four doubles, two triples and seven runs driven in. He also led the team in stolen bases with six.

Reed, a senior pitcher and outfield made the team after posting a batting average of .293 with three doubles and four RBI. He also had five stolen bases in district play.

Jennings, which went undefeated to win the league title, landed six players on the first team and swept the top honors with Jared Owen being named the Coach of the Year and Korey Kratzer earning Most Valuable Player honors.

Kratzer is joined on the first team by fellow teammates Kolby ringuet, Damond Meche, Keagan Kratzer, Kegan Myers and Justin Ringuet.

St. Louis followed Jennings with five selections.

Justin Nixon made the team at pitcher Gabe Thibodeaux is the only Saint on the infield at first base. Caleb Palmer nailed down a spot in the outfield and Doug Greenman and Jacob Ellis each made the team at utility.

Westlake pitcher Tyler Ross, shortstop Trent Whitley and utility player Kade Lemaire each made the team.

Iowa, which advanced to the Class AAA state tournament before falling to eventual champion Parkview Baptist in the semifinals, also landed three on the first unit in pitcher Logan Chapman and outfielders Seth Granger and Leighton Garret.

Iota senior first baseman Michael Simar and junior outfielder Josh Benoit made the honorable mention list.
