Iota trio tabbed to 4-AAA All-District squad
CROWLEY – The Iota Bulldogs’ baseball team had one of its best seasons in recent history in 2009, recording 13 wins and just missing the Class AAA playoffs after coming in third in a very competitive District 4-AAA.
For their accomplishments, the Bulldogs landed three players on the 4-AAA All-District first team and three on the second unit.
Iota catcher Aaron Hebert earned first-team honors after hitting .319 on the season with 17 RBI and 10 runs scored. He also had one home run and a .388 on base percentage.
Trenton Pickett and Blaise LeJeune each nailed down a spot on the first unit at utility.
Pickett, a senior shortstop, led the Bulldogs at the plate with a .378 average. He drove in six runs from the leadoff spot and had a .460 on base percentage.
LeJeune hit .320 with four home runs and 28 RBI while playing center field and pitching for the Dogs. On the mound, LeJeune posted a record of 3-1 with 21 strikeouts in just over 27 innings pitched.
Iowa logged seven spots on the first team including the Coach of the Year (Sean Richard) and Most Valuable Player (Logan Chapman) honors.
Richard led the Yellow Jackets to a 19-8 overall record and the District 4-AAA championship with a record of 7-1.
Chapman, a senior pitcher, went 3-1 in district play on the mound with 30 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.86. He also hit .483 with 14 RBI and four home runs.
Sophomore Tyler Chapman also made the team as a pitcher as well as Westlake’s Trent Whiten and St. Louis’ Jacob Ellis.
Joining Hebert on the infield are Iowa first baseman Shane Deshotel, St. Louis second baseman Hunter Duhon, Iowa third baseman Madisan Lachney and St. Louis shortstop Doug Greenman.
Iowa’s Leighton Garrett, St. Louis’ Reed Chaves and Jennings’ Zach Bertrand round out the outfield.
LeJeune and Pickett are joined by St. Louis’ Matt Gallier, Iowa’s Cody Bourque and Westlake’s Chris Daily as utility players.
Iota’s Chris Andrepont, Eric Speer and Chad Abshire were each named to the second team.
Andrepont was Iota’s top pitcher, logging a record of 6-2 with two saves. He struck out 47 in just over 52 innings.
Speer, a LSU-Alexandria signee, played third base throughout his senior campaign. He hit .279 with 13 RBI and had on base percentage of .468.
Abshire, the Bulldogs’ second baseman, hit .278 with 12 RBI and 21 runs scored.
Pitchers joining Andrepont on the second team are St. Louis’ Jacob Williams and Anthony Ferror and Jennings’ Kolby Ringuet.
The second unit infield consists of Westlake catcher Tyler Strodard, St. Louis first baseman Zack LaCombe, Westlake second baseman Garrett Thevis and Jennings shortstop Justin Ringuet.
The outfield is made up of St. Louis’ Darion Bartie and Kade Billeaubeaux and Iowa’s Chance Curlee.
Utility players include St. Louis’ Ty Griffin and Collin Todd, Iowa’s Kent Fontenot and Westlake’s Josh Fontenot.
Iowa’s Daniel Hennigan, Jennings’ Damond Meche, Iota’s Andrew Thevis and Josh Benoit and Westlake’s Blake Hollier were all tabbed as honorable mentions.
