Iota's Johnson earns league honors
CROWLEY – The Iota Lady Bulldogs’ basketball team went through a rebuilding year in 2012-13, adding a new coach - Meghann LeJeune - and replacing an entire starting lineup due to graduation.
The changes took their toll early in the season against a rugged schedule and led the traditional power to just a 6-15 mark heading into to district play.
But that brutal non-district schedule, that included losses to 10 teams that went to at least the second round of the playoffs, including eventual Class B state champions Fairview and Class 4A runnersup St. Thomas More, prepared the Lady Dogs for a run at the District 5-2A title
The Lady Dogs battled through league play and lost just two games to earn the runnersup spot behind champion Ville Platte. One of the big reasons for their success in district was the play of sophomore guard Brittany Johnson, who was recently named a first-team selection to the league’s All-District team.
Johnson paced the Lady Dogs with an average of 14 points per game in district play. She also averaged three rebounds and six assists.
Johnson is joined on the first unit by Ville Platte’s Bre O’Conner, who earned Most Valuable Player honors. The 5-foot-3 senior guard led the league in scoring with 24 points per outing to go along with four rebounds and six assists.
Ville Platte’s Dot Doulet was selected as the Coach of the Year.
Also making the first team were Ville Platte’s sophomore guard Dej McKinney, Oakdale sophomore forward Ramona Green and Mamou eighth grade guard Darelzray Bellard.
Iota sophomore Mallory Faul was named to the second team after averaging 13 points, 11 rebounds and 1 assist per game.
She is joined on the second unit by Bunkie’s T’Keyah Young, Ville Platte’s Shalinda Thomas, Oakdale’s Shaundreka Sandifer and Mamou’s Arkeiyanah Thomas.
Iota’s Jillian Boone and Taylor DeVille were tabbed to the league’s 14-member All-Defensive team. The duo was also named to the honorable mention list along with teammates Paige Soirez and Madison Smith.
Boys 5-2A All-District
Ville Platte swept the top honors on the boys 5-2A All-District team that was recently released.
Cody Jones led the league in scoring and was tabbed as the Most Valuable player while Lionel Anderson was selected as the Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 26-6 record and a state quarterfinal appearance.
Joining Jones on the first unit is teammate Tyler Thomas, Mamou’s Domique Austin, Pine Prairie’s Gijuan Anderson and Bunkie’s Deterrian Williams.
Second team members include Oakdale’s Deondre Hampton and Jamichael Jackson, Ville Platte’s Devonta Ardoin and Mike Thomas and Mamou’s Keyan Tezaeno.
Iota’s Andrew Bellon and Keegan LeJeune were named to the honorable mention list.
