It’s the Great Pumpkin

Back to back hurricanes wiped out most of Richland Parish’s pumpkin crop, but that didn’t stop five 4-Hers from entering this year’s Great Pumpkin contest at Richland State Bank. Jacob Stokes took first place with a 82 1/2 pounder; Madison McPherson was second with 58 1/2 pounds; Janna Rhodes as third with 31 1/2 pounds; C.J. Emfinger was fourth with 19 pounds and Emily Douciere was fifth with 18 pounds. The pumpkins were then auctioned to local bidders bringing in almost $600 for their growers. Winning bidders were George B. Franklin and Sons, Myrty Hales, Cross Keys Bank, Jim Taylor Chevrolet and Richland Therapy. Shown above are the entrants and bidders who purchased their pumpkins. In addition to growing winning pumpkins, Stokes, McPherson and Douciere finished in first, second and third place for preparing 4-H booklets on the contest.
