Jackson, Northeast lose in local prep hoops

Early last week the rim was unkind to two local teams in prep basketball action. The Northeast Vikings and Jackson Chiefs both suffered losses in district action as the prep regular season winds down.

Both teams had difficult task as the Vikings faced the undefeated district champion Redemptorist Wolves and the Chiefs match-up was just as tough with the highly touted Dunham Tigers of district 8-2A.

The Chiefs fell to the Tigers 71-52 and Redemptorist remained perfect in district 8-3A with a 53-44 decision over Northeast. In Jackson’s game the visiting Tigers of Dunham wasted no time in putting the Chiefs into a big hole.

Dunham started the game with a 22-11 run in the first and then added to their lead in the second period with a 23-12 run. The Tigers led at halftime 45-23 and then put things on cruise control in the second half.

Marquis Ferguson paced the Chiefs with 17 points while K. Washington added 10 in a losing cause. Dunham went on to win the game 71-52 and closed the second half with a 26-29 run. In the Vikings game the Wolves kept their perfect district season alive.

Redemptorist opened the contest with a 14-11 run and then outscored the Vikings 10-5 in the second period to build a 24-16 halftime lead. The Wolves slow paced keep away style was tough to overcome for Northeast.

The Vikings would put up 28 points in the second half but it would not be enough as the Wolves picked up a nine point 53-44 victory to move to 9-0 in district play. The Vikings fell to 4-5 in district play and where waiting to see if the made the 3A playoffs. Altron Rogers led the Vikings with 13 points.
