Jamboree action kicks off prep baseball season
RAYNE – The 2009 prep baseball season officially gets underway Saturday with teams across the state participating in their annual jamborees.
Locally, Rayne High School is hosting its annual jamboree at the newly renovated Gossen Memorial Park Saturday.
A total of four jayvee and four varsity squads are scheduled to participate in the event.
Rayne’s jayvee squad will hit the field at 9 a.m. to take on Crowley High. The second game, also a jayvee contest, will begin at 10:30 a.m. and pit Church Point against Welsh.
The varsity squads will play the last four games beginning with a noon showdown between Crowley and Church Point. Crowley will remain on the field to take on Welsh at 1:30.
The host Wolves will play the last two games, taking on Church Point at 3 p.m. and Welsh at 4:30.
Crowley opens the regular season Monday when they travel to Baton Rouge Community College to take on Franklinton at 5 p.m.
Rayne and Church Point will also be in action Monday. The Wolves will play host to Iowa while the Bears entertain Beau Chene.
In other local action, Notre Dame will travel to Lafayette Saturday to participate in the Teurlings Catholic Jamboree while Iota will be in Eunice playing in the Eunice High/St. Edmund Jamboree.
Notre Dame will take on Westminster at 12:45 p.m. and Teurlings at 3:15.
Iota will kick things off Saturday morning at 10 a.m. when they square off with Pine Prairie at North Park. The Bulldogs will also take on Sacred Heart of Ville Platte at 12:20 p.m.
Iota and Notre Dame’s jayvee teams will also be in Eunice tonight. The junior Bulldogs will take on Oakdale at 3:30 p.m. while the Pios are slated to take on Eunice at 8:10 p.m.
Notre Dame opens the regular season at Breaux Bridge Monday while Iota hosts Welsh Thursday.
