CROWLEY – Funeral services will be held Friday, July 25, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home for James Smith, 85, who joined his heavenly father, parents and siblings on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 following a brief illness.
Rev. Bob Brantley and Rev. Scotty Smith will officiate for the services. The family requests visiting hours Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to service time. Burial will be in North Hanks Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Crowley. He was a veteran of World War II having served his country in the US Army as an infantryman. He was a member of American Legion Post 15 and V. F. W. Post 6720. He was very active in his church and enjoyed fishing, camping and all outdoor activities. He served as a father to his nieces and nephews and was fondly referred to as “Uncle James” by most.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Theresa Stafford Smith of Crowley; one daughter, Evon Smith of Ponchatoula; one son, Pacerd Newman and his wife Melanie of Crowley; two grandchildren, Eric Newman, Tillie and her husband Josh Morgan; four great- grandchildren, Lance, Jayden and Maddox Morgan, Brileigh Newman; sisters-in-law, Ruby S. Suire of Crowley, Evelyn S. Barousse and her husband Andy of Crowley, Doris D. Stafford of Crowley; brothers-in-law, Jesse Stafford and his wife Ann of Crowley; Nathaniel Hoffpauir of Crowley.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Emile and Odelia Stewart Smith; four sisters, Amelia S. Sarver, Eva S. Myers, Virgie S. Davy, Elvina “Bootie” S. Stewart; four brothers, Arthur Smith, Lawrence Smith, Cornelius “Neil” Smith, Charlie Smith.
The family wishes to thank, Dr. M. N. Katira and staff, the hospital staff of American Legion, Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center and Acadian Ambulance medics.
