Junior Oilers fall to Moss Bluff
By John Burson
The Eunice Junior Oilers fell behind early in Wednesday American Legion Junior Baseball contest against Moss Bluff and could never recover, leading to a 10-3 defeat in a District 7-East contest.
The Junior Oilers dropped to 2-3 in district play as a result of the loss, in a game played at home at Bobcat Field. The Junior Oilers will hit the road on Monday to face Jennings before returning home to host Crowley on Wednesday.
Moss Bluff scored a run in the first inning, then added five in the second as Eunice starter Tyler Fontenot struggled early on the mound.
Billy Sommers had a run-scoring double in the first, while Cody Rider’s bases-loaded double in the second was the key hit in that inning.
Fontenot settled down to pitch shutout baseball over the next three innings, giving his team an opportunity to get back into the game. Fontenot worked five innings and scattered five hits. He walked four and fanned six.
It took Eunice until the fourth to push any runs across. Tyler Fontenot led off the inning with a single and courtesy runner Brandon Baquet advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Eunice catcher Trent Vidrine continued the inning when he was hit by a pitch and courtesy runner Jonathan Jannisse replaced him on the bases. Both runners advanced a base on yet another wild pitch. Alex Comeaux delivered a two-run single to score both runners to cut the Moss Bluff lead to 6-2.
Moss Bluff managed to get one run back in the sixth off reliever Jonathan Tucker thanks to a run-scoring single by Chance Terrell.
Eunice cut the lead to 7-3 with a run in their sixth. Comeaux opened the inning with a single and Matthew Bari was hit by a pitch to move Comeaux to second base. Zac Person grounded into a fielders’ choice, with Bari being put out at second base and Comeaux advancing to third. Comeaux would score when Person stole second and catcher Matt LeBlanc committed an error on the throw.
Moss Bluff eliminated all doubt about the game’s outcome by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. The Oilers were held scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
Comeaux and Tyler Fontenot led Eunice offensively with two hits apiece.
Justin Dufrene and LeBlanc led Moss Bluff with two hits apiece.
