Junior Oilers fall to St. Louis in shutout

LAKE CHARLES - The Eunice Junior Oilers were limited to one hit here Wednesday night at Legion Field as they dropped an 8-0 decision to St. Louis in District 7 American Legion Baseball action.

With the loss, the Junior Oilers fell to 4-5 in district play. On Monday, the Junior Oilers will visit Moss Bluff before returning home Wednesday to host Jennings.

St. Louis pitcher Ty Griffin limited the Eunice offense to just one hit in going the distance for the Saints. Griffin walked just one batter and recorded seven strike outs.

The lone hit for Eunice came in the first inning when Tyler Fontenot touched Griffin for a one-out single.

Fontenot was erased on the bases when the following batter, Connor Cortina, lined out to Saints’ third baseman Cameron Landry, who fired to first base for the double play.

The Junior Oilers managed just two other base runners for the remainder of the game. Jonathan Tucker drew a walk in the third inning but was erased on a steal attempt.

The other Eunice base runner came in the fourth when Cortina reached on an error. Cortina advanced to second on a wild pitch but was left stranded.

St. Louis scored two runs in the first inning off Eunice starting pitcher Tyler Fontenot. Doug Greenman singled and Fontenot issued walks to the next two batters. An error allowed Greenman to score, and an error brought home the second run before Fontenot fanned the next three batters to end the inning.

The Saints picked up single unearned runs in the second and third innings to increase their lead to 4-0. The Saints put the game away with a four-run fifth inning.

Tyler Fontenot worked four innings, scattering three hits, walking four, and striking out five. He allowed just two earned runs.

Jacob Fontenot relieved Tyler Fontenot in the fifth. He worked two innings, allowing two hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out two.
