Kaplan clerk accused of stealing

KAPLAN - Kaplan Mayor Linda Hardee and the Kaplan City Council members terminated long-time city employee, Brenda Campbell, during a special meeting held last week.

Campbell, the accounting/payroll clerk, had been employed with the city for 13 1/2 years.

A statement issued by Mayor Hardee stated Campbell was terminated due to theft.

The press release stated:

“It is most unfortunate that the City Council and I have to take the measure of terminating Mrs. Campbell’s job as payroll clerk for the City of Kaplan.

“However, as elected officials, we have to be responsible and accountable to the taxpayers of this city.

“As a result of theft, Mrs. Campbell has made restitution for the money that she took. The investigation will be referred to law enforcement agencies for prosecution.

“We must send a strong message to the public that behavior of this nature will not be tolerated by city officials. We take our job very seriously and wish to uphold the city’s utmost trust in our ability to carry on the duties of our offices.
