Kaplan stuns Church Point

CHURCH POINT – Kaplan’s Jalen Bates scored on a 13-yard pass from Jay Herpin with 23 seconds left in the game to lift the Pirates to a 13-10 upset over the Church Point Bears. 

Kaplan grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Devonte Davis scored on a 1-yard run with 8:50 left in the period.

Church Point’s Kian Richard nailed a 43-yard field goal with1:13 left in the second period as the Bears closed the gap to 7-3 at the break.

The homestanding Bears seemed poised to steal the win when James Bellard scored on an 11-yard run and Richard nailed the PAT with 2:41 left in the contest.

But the Pirates last-second heroics stunned the Bears, who fell to 1-1 on the season.

Bellard finished with 49 yards on 12 carries, while Deion Monroe added 36 yards on seven carries for the Bears.

Church Point quarterback Jake Morvant completed 5-of-17 passes for 32 yards and an interception.
