Kentwood uses big 4th quarter to pick up first win

BATON ROUGE – One week ago the Roos of Kentwood fell to St. Helena as the Hawks scored 26 fourth quarter points to come from behind to in the game. The Roos themselves would do the late scoring against Christian Life to pick up a much needed 32-19 win over the Crusaders.

Trailing 19-12 entering the fourth quarter the Roos exploded for 20 unanswered points to win the game 32-19. Kentwood had trouble stopping one of the best running backs in Class 1A and CLA’s Shane Andrus. Andrus finished the game with 186-yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns.

But when the Roos Defense needed to step up they did. Kentwood bent but did not break as they held Christian Life to one score in the second half and kept them off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.

The 7th ranked Roos of Class 1A had their backs to the wall and responded with a huge fourth quarter to pick up their first win of the season. The Roos opened the game with an impressive drive.

Kentwood embarked on a 14-play 71-yard drive that ended when Bobby Earl scored on a two-yard run to give the Roos a 6-0 lead. But CLA would answer as they tied the scored later in the quarter 6-6.

Christian Life would then scored the games next nineteen points as they took control and looked to be sending the Roos to an 0-3 record. But Kentwood came to life late in the third quarter.

The Roos comeback trail began when Tevin Goggins scored on a nine-yard run to cut the lead to 19-12. Kentwood would not be denied as they scored the games final twenty-six points, which was the same amount the Roos surrendered last week in their loss to St. Helena.

Kentwood then took the lead for good in the fourth quarter when Eugene Buckner scored on a 32-yard run. Coach Currier then went for two and the Roos were successful as Tevin Goggins ran it to make the score 20-19 in favor of Kentwood.

The Roos Offense amassed 411-yards of total offense including 277-yards rushing. Leading 20-19 the Roos began to pull away in the fourth quarter when Bobby Earl scored on a 45-yard run to give Kentwood a 26-19 lead.

The Roos Defense then got the ball back and Kentwood put the nail in the coffin when Goggins scored on a 59-yard and the Roos went on to win the game 32-19. Goggins paced the Roos with 127-yards on eight carries and two touchdowns and Eugene Buckner added 75-yards on nine rushes and a touchdown.

The Roos return home this week as they play host to district rival Southern Lab Thursday Night “Under the Tank.”
