The LSU at Eunice Lady Bengals took a narrow loss Saturday afternoon, as the Division I Lady Runners of Angelina College (Lufkin, Texas) battled their way to a 91-83 win.
LSUE drew first blood, with Jennifer Hicks’ basket at the 19:20 mark, but Angelina’s Tiara George scored three baskets to give the Lady Runners the lead.
LSUE surged on a 13-2 run, sparked by three treys from Hicks, to take a 15-8 lead in partway through the first half.
Angelina came back, however, mounting a 9-0 offensive that helped the Lady Runners recapture the lead with 7:20 remaining in the first half.
LSUE closed the point gap a couple of times, but fell short near the end, with two free throws from Lady Runner Anitra Jeffery helping to close the half with a 50-46 Angelina lead.
After a goal by Lady Runner Brittany Lewis to start the second half, LSUE went on a 12-3 run, led by baskets and free throws from Quanessa Batiste, that helped the Lady Bengals capture a three-point lead.
The two teams struggled for dominance before Angelina went on a 10-2 run midway through the half that ended the Lady Bengals’ last chance to control the game.
LSUE mounted a 7-2 run to close within seven point of Angelina’s lead in the last four minutes of the game, but the Lady Runners kept up the pressure and waited out the clock in the final seconds.
Hicks led the game in scoring with 26 points, including nine out of 15 free throws. She was followed on the Lady Bengal side by Batiste with 20 points.
Jeffery led the Lady Runners with 21 points, followed by George and Sara Stewart, who each chipped in 16 points.
With the win, Angelina rises to 18-7 overall; LSUE drops to 16-10 for the season.
The Lady Bengals wrap up their regular season Saturday at Jacksonville College.
